Alicia Crowe is a fellow college graduate of mine along with her sister, Alice&#x2014;with all of us getting degreed at Adelphi University in the mid-1980s. Alicia and Alice are rebel fighters for the &#x2018;Right Thing&#x2019; cause (in Spike Lee speak). The posse at Adelphi U are strands in the cultural revolution that platformed the movement of Public Enemy. Fellow classmate such as Bill Stephney PD, while at our legendary and now-defunct (or DE funked) college station WBAU, was the prodigal leader of it all writing for CMJ, also radioing at WLIR, and eventually the president to sign PE at DEF JAM.

Bill was there along with other classmates such as Andre &#x2018;Doctor Dre&#x2019; Brown, Harry Allen, Wildman Steve Adams and then my local crew, Spectrum City&#x2014;Hank and Keith Shocklee, Flavor, Griff, and TerminatorX and so on... Well, the Crowe Sisters, who were from The New City Nyack area of New York State, were a big part of our fighting spirit with their own radio shows, campus protests, and they brought legal fortitude as lawyers for the underserved post graduating AU.

We all were multi-talented while freedom fighting racist, sexist dumb sht and the Crowe Sisterhood was no exception. It&#x2019;s no surprise that Alicia Crowe has taken on the performance art of The Songs of Alberta Hunter. A free freedom fighter herself, Ms. Hunter&#x2019;s dexterity and ability to reach and touch any audience across the decades of her long, storied life makes it an enjoyable musical trek&#x2014;yet a daunting task to cover. In Alicia&#x2019;s own words, *&#x201C;Ms. Hunter&#x2019;s career spanned six decades as she overcame obstacles and broke racial barriers to become one of the first African American singers to make the transition from performing in lowly brothels to becoming the &#x201C;toast of royalty and international society.&#x201D;*

Alicia studied the makeup of Ms. Hunter&apos;s life deep enough to convey her sentiment and attitude in the stellar performances of these songs&#x2014;written almost a century ago. It&#x2019;s personal too, as Alicia states, *&#x201C;She is how my parents met and started dating before they got married. Alberta worked with both my parents at Gold Water Hospital in the 1950&#x2019;s when she worked there as a nurse supervisor. My mother, a retired nurse, lived across the hall from her in the nurse&#x2019;s residence. My father worked in the recreation department&#x2026; I want people to remember Alberta Hunter&#x2019;s name, her work, and her legacy. After all, if it weren&#x2019;t for Alberta Hunter, I would not be here.&#x201D;*

Alicia Crowe not only covers Alberta Hunter as the performer; she captures that &#x2018;time&#x2019; as a musical and stage play would. Alberta Hunter&#x2019;s story of *forward, fortitude, fight, fear, frolicking, fighting racist/sexist f*ckery, and fun* is documented in the film, Wild Women Sing The Blues. The trek and trip of her life colored and styled the songs so well. As with &#x201C;My Handy Man&#x2019;s&#x201D; wit and triple-double entendres, and the storied, &#x201C;Downhearted Blues&#x201D; which had its own long tail beyond the wind itself, and of course the title track &#x201C;My Castle&#x2019;s Rockin&#x201D; which intros and outros this cultural cabaret of 9 craft-fully selected tunes.

Alicia Crowe&#x2019;s solo show, &#x201C;Come on up... My Castle&#x2019;s Rockin... A Tribute to Alberta Hunter,&#x201D; well-captured the vibe and was recorded at the Triad Theater to a packed audience one cold Wednesday on November 14th of 2018. Backed by a stellar group of musicians: Takakki Otomo on piano, Noriko Ueda on bass, and George Gray on the drums along with a special appearance by Rome Neal.

Lastly, to answer &#x201C;why this recording project?&#x201D; Fellow partner and President of The SpitSlam Record Label Group David CDoc Snyder shares the same vision in really honing the essence of record labels past by capturing a diverse artist&#x2019;s sound, fine art photography, video recording, and esthetic. Together Al-J and Yusuf are Blak Madeen, an Islam-inspired duo that evokes the &#x201C;conscious era&#x201D; of hip hop of the late 80s and early 90s.&#xA0; Al-J tells it best: &quot;I met Yusuf in 2005, I had cut a CD called Blak Ambitition and I was doing this show at the Western Front in Cambridge, MA. I bumped into this white kid wearing a kufi. He didn&#x2019;t know me. I didn&#x2019;t know him, but I gave him a CD. First thing he said to me, &#x2018;Are you dropping knowledge on this?&#x2019; I was like, &#x2018;Yeah,&#x2019; and I guess he liked it. We&#x2019;ve been working with each other ever since.&#x201D; Boston hip hop promoter Ned Wellbery (Leedz Edutainment) nudged the two to work together. They discovered a shared passion for the music of Gang Starr, Public Enemy and Divine Styler. Al-J said their aim was to &#x201C;carry the torch of the people who&#x2019;ve gone before.&#x201D; The group began releasing music in 2009 and their catalogue includes Supreme Aftermath (2016), as well as two EPs, Miltant Minds (a collaboration with Tragedy) in 2012, and One Second To Pray in 2018. The essence of James brown was the likeness of this man and with him also being a father figure to Kris, this record is surely dedicated to this cause.

**Chill Like That (Prod By Damon Mapp Tracks):** my experiences in SXSW in Texas a few years ago brought me around some true musical geniuses. Including DJ Mapp Tracks, who Produced this finely tuned baseline track for Kris Payne to flex on why he&#x2019;s the smoothest, since sliced bread. Here is &#x201C;Chill Like That&#x201D;!!

**It&#x2019;ll Be Ok (Produced by Damon Mapp Tracks):** it&#x2019;ll be ok is one of the best written records by Payne to describe the times we are living in as a people. Mapp Tracks finds the correct tempo for this message and this is the perfect way to end an album provoking thought and insurance of a spiritual cleansing by readjusting how we live.

The 10,000 STRONG song came to me, when the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan was talking about have 10,000 men and women hit the streets to change the conditions in our neighborhoods. Police State is personal to me, because my younger brother was gun down by a police officer in Pahokee, Fla. this was before cell phones and video can go vireo on social media.... President Union Address: I wrote this song watching President Union address, The way that I wrote this was how would poor people look at this.

With the rising cost of healthcare senior living and desert storm war. That song actually can fit whatever time frame whichever president comes in to office so it fit that desert storms wars at that particular time but it also representing President helping out the banking industry&quot; Poor people is suffering daily. Especially black and brown people.....

**Description of From The Mind of**

**Change:** Be the change you want to see: like you being example of the change you wanna see in life or in this landscape call America. Change is the only thing, is Constant in the universe. if not, change will change you.

**45:** About the Reality star who happens to be the 45th President of the United States. He actually makes the country looks like child&#x2019;s play the movie. We are watching A Jerry Springer show in reality happens to be playing out in the White House.

**Police State:** The landscape of America for black people is a police state. If we are at war, we don&#x2019;t know it. Every encounter that black men and black women for that matter and children in the last five or 10 years we&#x2019;ve been killed or murdered by police in this country. Sandra Bland, Eric Gardner, Tamir Rice, Tamir Rice was a 12 year old child. Kill by a police officer. My younger brother was gun down by sheriffs department in Pahokee Florida. This song is personal to me.

**State of the Union Address:** I was watching George Bush Address to country I kind of thought like how would poor people perceive his union address and what would it be like if poor people had a Voice in this Country. No advocate for poor. The war that&#x2019;s been raging on in the desert for 25 years. Under all the presidents that came in the office... our agenda for black people have been the same for every president&#x2026;

**Smoke:** about the weed industry legalizing it throughout the states but it&#x2019;s not legal federally which is a trick for black man to be arrested at the federal level. A lot of black men being arrested Put in jail for, what is being made legal now. We must control the out come of our circumstances being a part of that legally. Business that is!

**Trap Music:** trap music is really about your mind being trapped and this 3000 x 3000 square box call the America. Depicting some of the things that we go through. And lastly the people who built the pyramids need to get that mind back.

**Ten Thousand Strong:** 10,000 strong is an idea coming from the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan. Talking about 10,000 black men and women out in the neighborhood of black America to make our neighborhoods a better place for our selves and our children and families that is a campaign for all black men and women who want to see our neighborhoods a decent place to live.

**Unity of the Planet:** this particular song talked about people living on the only thing that we can live on that is the planet earth and people understanding culture and each other. We must learn from each other not kill the planet. The main idea here. People understanding people without destroying each other.

**Exit Your Mind:** This song is really about the only way we can get to a higher level of consciousness is to submit too the author of conscious and that&#x2019;s God. We can learn any discipline that we want, but we must submit to God in order to get to that mastery of ourselves.
